Return-to-Duty and SAP Case Management: Workflow Automation and Tracking
When an employee tests positive or refuses a test, they must complete a return-to-duty (RTD) process before returning to safety-sensitive work. Under 49 CFR Part 40 Subpart O, this involves evaluation by a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP), treatment or education, and a follow-up drug test. Atlas Onboard manages the entire case from violation to clearance.
RTD Process
From positive result to return-to-duty—documented end-to-end.
Case Opening
When an MRO verifies a positive or a refusal is logged, Atlas Onboard automatically opens an RTD case. The employee is flagged and cannot be scheduled for safety-sensitive work until the case closes.
SAP Evaluation Tracking
Atlas Onboard tracks SAP evaluation scheduling, completion, and recommendations. You don't need to chase the SAP—Atlas Onboard notifies all parties and maintains a timestamped record.
Follow-Up Testing Coordination
Once the SAP authorizes a return-to-duty test, Atlas Onboard generates the collection order. The follow-up test must be direct-observed; Atlas Onboard coordinates with your clinic network.
Case Closure & Clearinghouse Reporting
When the follow-up test passes, the RTD case closes. If the employee is a CDL driver, Atlas Onboard reports the RTD clearance to the FMCSA Clearinghouse automatically.
